Welcome to Pony B! This is where young players take the next step in their baseball journey. Building on the skills learned in tee-ball, our coach pitch division introduces kids to hitting a moving ball while keeping the focus on fun, teamwork, and learning the fundamentals of the game.
In Pony B, every player bats every inning, everyone plays in the field, and the emphasis is on development rather than competition. Our coaches work with players on throwing, catching, and hitting fundamentals in a supportive, encouraging environment.
Our Seasons
Spring Season
March - June
Our main season! Teams practice weekly and play games on weekday evenings. The season includes approximately 10-12 games plus playoffs. Registration typically opens in January.
Fall Season
August - October
A shorter, more relaxed season perfect for players who want extra practice or are new to baseball. Great opportunity to work on skills before the spring season.
Rules & Expectations
Games are designed to give everyone maximum playing time:
- Weekday games start at 6:00 PM and last up to 6 innings
- Each team bats through their entire lineup every inning - no three-outs-and-done!
- All players stay on base regardless of whether they're safe or out - we're learning, not eliminating!
- Runners advance one base at a time with each batter
- Home team sits on the third base side and is responsible for field setup
- Games may be called after 3 innings if weather or darkness becomes an issue
At this level, we focus on learning rather than winning:
- No score is kept during games - it's all about development and fun!
- All hits are singles - players advance base to base
- No stealing bases or tagging up - runners wait until the ball is hit
- No advancing on passed balls - this keeps the game moving smoothly
- Bunting is practiced but not used in games
This is a coach pitch division - here's how it works:
- Coaches throw overhand, hittable pitches to each batter
- Each batter gets 5 swings to put the ball in play
- If a batter doesn't connect after 5 pitches, they hit off a tee - everyone gets on base!
- Coaches encourage players to only swing at good pitches to start learning the strike zone
- Players won't pitch in games until Pony A, but coaches can start working with interested players on pitching skills during practice
Field dimensions: 42 feet from pitcher's mound to home plate, 55 feet between bases.
Field Setup (For Coaches)
Home team coaches are responsible for field prep:
- Arrive early to check field condition
- Bases are located in the shed along the outfield fencing
- No field lining is necessary at this level
- Home team supplies the game ball
The 3-wheeler and drag mat are in the garage:
- Drive the 3-wheeler to the field and assess your starting point
- Unsecure the mat, drop the drag bar and unroll the mat
- Drag clockwise at a slow pace, working toward the center
- Exit at the 3rd base corner (don't take mat into grass)
- Raise drag bar, roll mat, and secure it
- Use rake to spread piled-up dirt from the mat
Important: Avoid dragging directly over base plate covers - this can bend the drag mat loops and twist the base insert boxes. Also stay clear of dugout walls and fencing.
Do NOT use the tines unless specifically asked and trained!
Away team coaches handle cleanup after the last game:
- Return bases to the outfield shed
- Replace base covers
- Lock the shed if you're the last one using it (check with Pony A and Quickball teams)
